Prostate Enlargement
About The Procedure
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as prostate enlargement, is a common condition in men as they age. It occurs when the prostate gland, which surrounds the urethra, grows larger than normal, causing symptoms such as frequent or urgent need to urinate, difficulty starting or maintaining urination, weak urine stream, dribbling at the end of urination, and the sensation of incomplete emptying of the bladder.
If conservative treatments like medication fail to alleviate symptoms, your doctor may recommend surgery to relieve the obstruction caused by an enlarged prostate. One advanced surgical option for BPH is called Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP).
Operation
HoLEP surgery is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a laser to remove excess prostate tissue, relieving pressure on the urethra and improving urine flow. During the procedure, a small tube with a camera (endoscope) is inserted into the urethra to visualize the prostate. The laser is then used to precisely vaporize and remove obstructive prostate tissue, creating a wider channel for urine to pass through.
HoLEP surgery offers several advantages over traditional surgical methods, including shorter hospital stays, faster recovery times, reduced risk of complications, and improved long-term outcomes. It is particularly beneficial for men with larger prostates or those who are not good candidates for other surgical approaches.
Robotic simple prostatectomy is also a state-of-the-art surgical procedure designed to alleviate the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), commonly known as prostate enlargement. This condition occurs when the prostate gland grows larger than usual, squeezing the urethra and causing bothersome urinary symptoms such as frequent urination, weak urine flow, and difficulty emptying the bladder completely
The robotic approach is reserved for when the prostate gland is very big, in other words, in those cases the surgeon thinks that the laser / endoscopic approach would not bring a very good result.
